Deck builders in Archer

Archer sits about fourteen miles southwest of Gainesville on the road toward the coast, a small city surrounded by pasture, pine, and rural properties on large parcels.

Archer has both ends of the age range in a small area: older houses in and near the town, and newer building spread out on acreage around it. Older houses here are frequently raised off the ground, which is good news for a deck, because it means a real floor height to work with and a structure that can sit high rather than a platform sitting a step below the door. It also means the ledger question is real, and on any house of that age the wall behind an existing ledger is worth opening before assuming it is sound.

The rural lots bring different considerations. There is space to build something substantial, more likelihood of a slope worth using, and usually mature trees worth building around rather than clearing. There is also more distance between the house and any storm drainage, so surface water goes where the land sends it. A deck sitting over a low spot is a deck whose posts stay damp, and correcting the grade is cheaper before the framing goes up.

This is western Alachua County, which is the part of the county where limestone sits closest to the surface. That is not a reason to worry about a deck, which is a light structure spread over many footings, but it is a reason to dig rather than assume, and a reason to take seriously any new pooling or slumping on a property.

Screened structures do well out here. Rural properties near pasture and standing water get more insect pressure in the evening than a subdivision does, and a screen room is often the difference between a deck used year-round and a deck used in March.
