Deck builders in Micanopy

Micanopy is a small historic town south of Gainesville on the far side of Paynes Prairie, known for its deep live oak canopy and a housing stock a good deal older than most of the county.

Micanopy is an old-house town, and old houses change every part of a deck job. Floor heights are higher, so stairs and landings are part of the design rather than an afterthought. Wall assemblies are older and sometimes unusual, so a ledger is opened up and inspected rather than bolted through on faith. And porches, not decks, are the historical form here, which often makes a roofed structure the more appropriate answer both visually and practically.

The canopy is the other defining feature. Live oaks here are large and old and worth building around, and a deck framed to leave room for a trunk to keep growing is a far better structure than one that took the tree out. Bear in mind that larger trees are regulated, so where a layout would require removal rather than accommodation, that becomes a permitting question before it becomes a construction question.

Heavy shade changes the material choice in a useful direction. A shaded deck does not bake, so the surface temperature argument that dominates on an open lot disappears, and darker boards become reasonable again. What replaces it is a moisture argument: shade means slower drying, and slower drying means more algae on the surface and more attention to airflow under the framing and clear gaps between boards.

Because this is unincorporated Alachua County, permits are handled by Alachua County Growth Management rather than the city. On an older property it is worth establishing early what the existing structure was permitted as, since a porch that was enclosed at some point in the past may not match what the record says is there.
